Dakar delight for Ventura as he secures maiden Rally2 stage victory
Martim Ventura delivered a spectacular performance in Saudi Arabia to claim his first-ever Dakar Rally stage victory and the maiden stage win for the Monster Energy Honda HRC Rally2 team.
After an impressive showing on the opening full stage of this year’s event, where he finished runner-up, Ventura came into the day highly motivated and firmly focused on securing another good result aboard his Honda CRF450RX RALLY.
Departing from the Yanbu bivouac, which the Dakar will return to later in the rally, riders faced a demanding 400 km timed special. The stage combined technical passages through the towering Hejaz Mountains with fast sandy tracks and scattered dunes, before finishing near the ancient city of AlUla.
Ventura quickly found his rhythm and mixed it with the RallyGP frontrunners, running inside the top four early on. As the stage unfolded, an intense duel developed between the 25-year-old Portuguese rider and Michael Docherty, with just two seconds separating them at one point. The pair traded blows throughout the remainder of the stage, but Ventura ultimately emerged victorious, winning by nearly two minutes. He now sits just 19 seconds off the overall lead in the general classification.
Preston Campbell also impressed, setting the fastest time at the opening checkpoint. Building on the lessons learned from stage one, he managed the dusty conditions well to secure a strong third-place finish. That result propels him from seventh to fourth overall.
With the riders safely settled at the AlUla bivouac, attention now turns to stage three. The rugged terrain surrounding the region promises plenty of navigation challenges on a long and punishing day, with over 700 km to be covered, including 422 km against the clock, as the relentless demands of this year’s Dakar Rally continue.

It was an amazing result for Martim winning the rally2 category and he ended up quite a few times in the top five of all the riders during the stage, as it’s this kind of terrain he really likes and the bike performs well on it. Preston finished third today which is a good result at his first Dakar and despite not having much rally-raid experience it was a really strong stage for him. This is our goal to take it day by day, be consistent and not make any mistakes. The Dakar is so long, they are inexperienced at this event and are rookies, so they both need to learn and understand the rally. It’s like the Tour de France, you have both good and bad days and the goal on the latter is for it to not be so bad. I’m super happy with their performances so far, I hope they can manage the positions they will start stage three in tomorrow and arrive back in AlUla in good shape.

My plan was to start to increase the pace through the rally, however, the pace is already good and if I stay like this throughout the rally then I’m happy. The pace is super high, I feel comfortable riding fast and it’s a dream start, in a dream race, in a dream team, so I’m happy. When I think about fourteen days of racing and the pace we set today, it’s going to be tough, but we train for this, so no complaints about it.

My first two stages went pretty good, yesterday I learnt a lot and today I improved so I was happier with how I rode throughout the long stage and it went pretty well. I felt good and comfortable on the rocks, I caught some dust early on which was the hardest part of today, just to push and get through it, but also try not to crash. Overall, I was happy with how I rode today and I’m now ready for tomorrow.
