Preston Campbell extended his advantage in the overall standings, while teammate Martim Ventura continued his steady climb and now sits just off the provisional podium.

Stage nine delivered a demanding mix of terrain for the Monster Energy Honda HRC riders, with fast canyon tracks, off-piste sections and seemingly endless dunes.  The 418 km timed special from Wadi ad-Dawasir to the marathon camp also presented added hazards, including animals, requiring constant vigilance.

Starting the day with a nine-and-a-half-minute lead in the Rally2 category, Campbell has adopted a measured approach since taking over the overall lead on stage four, focused on consistency and avoiding mistakes.  That strategy paid off once again, as the young American extended his advantage with a third-place stage finish, increasing his overall lead to 17’28” as the rally moves closer to its conclusion.

Ventura struggled to find his rhythm early on, losing valuable time due to an early navigation issue that also caught out several RallyGP riders.  Despite the setback, he climbed another position in the overall standings and now sits fourth, with the final podium spot firmly within reach, just five minutes behind Ruy Barbosa.

With marathon conditions once again awaiting the riders – tents, mattresses and sleeping bags – the Dakar continues to test endurance as much as speed.  When stage ten gets underway at sunrise, both Campbell and Ventura will be aiming for a clean, trouble-free run back to Bisha, where they will reunite with their team.

General Manager

Martim made the same navigation mistake as the RallyGP riders so he lost quite a lot of time. When Preston arrived, he found the right way and rode a smooth stage to finish third. It was a good stage for him as he gained time and he’s now leading by more than 17 minutes. Martim has gone up to fourth overall and he’s not far off third. Let’s see if tomorrow he can get on the podium.

Martim Ventura 84

Stage: 14th Overall: 4th

It was a quick stage, we had dunes, rivers, hard pack, it was a good stage for me to attack, I felt super good but just made a navigation mistake.

Preston Campbell 85

Stage: 3rd Overall: 1st

It was a tough stage, there was a difficult navigation section but I luckily I only lost a little bit of time compared to other riders. I've got to the marathon camp and my bike is good, I feel strong and I'm ready for tomorrow.
